Emma Hallock
Welcome! I'm Emma Hallock, an English PhD student at the University of Delaware. I study nineteenth- and early twentieth-century literature from the Northern Atlantic islands Great Britain, Ireland, and Iceland. Grounded in queer and feminist theory, my work explores representations of death in gothic and horror literature (as well as their sister genres: weird, sensation, detective, and thriller/crime literature). I am most interested in fiction that challenges hegemonic ideas about death, dying, and mourning.
I also enjoy writing and talking about film and television, contemporary romance and horror novels, popular culture, fan studies, and anything by Jorge Luis Borges.
When not reading or writing, I can usually be found knitting or taking long walks through cemeteries. My favorite things to knit are cabled hats and patterned scarves. My favorite cemeteries are Hólavallagarður in Reykjavík, Kerepesi in Budapest, and Okunoin in Kōya-san.
On this site, you can read more about my research, writing, and teaching. Feel free to get in touch with any questions.
